How to measure your deck area

Use the overall outside dimensions. Enter metres: for example, 450 centimetres is 4.5 metres. For an L-shape, measure the rectangular corner that is missing from the overall footprint.

Rectangular deck

Length × width

6 m × 4 m = 24 m²

L-shaped deck

Overall rectangle − corner cut-out

(6 × 4) − (2 × 2) = 20 m²
How do I calculate the area of a rectangular deck?

Measure the length and width in metres, then multiply them. A deck 6 metres long and 4 metres wide has an area of 6 × 4 = 24 m².

How do I measure an L-shaped deck?

Measure the overall rectangle, then subtract the missing corner. For a 6 × 4 metre rectangle with a 2 × 2 metre corner removed, the deck area is 24 − 4 = 20 m². This calculator supports one rectangular corner cut-out.

Is the offcut allowance the same as my finished deck area?

No. Finished area measures the space the deck covers. The optional offcut allowance adds a percentage for surface-material planning. For 24 m² with a 10% allowance, the planning quantity is 26.4 m². The builder must confirm actual board sizes, layout and ordering quantities.

Does the deck calculator provide a building quote?

No. It estimates area and illustrates the shape and finish. It does not calculate labour, structure, foundations, drainage, fixings, steps, balustrades or consent costs. Request a site consultation for a project-specific scope and price.

Can this calculator measure my deck from a photo?

No. Enter measurements you have taken in metres. The 3D view is an illustrative layout, not a survey or construction drawing.
